Þjónustumiðstöð Vesturbæjar, Miðborgar og Hlíða (The Municipal Service Centre for Vesturbær, Miðborg and Hlíðar) is one of five municipal service centres for the city of Reykjavík. The centres offer services and advise to individuals and families in all kinds of matters regarding welfare, schools, matters related to people with disabilities, senior citizens, home services etc. Within services addressed for schools, the Centre offers school support services, such as psychological and educational assessment for children in preschools and compulsory schools. They also collaborate in a range of leisure services and activities; as well as with health Care, child protection and many other services. The Centre also aims to make municipal services more accessible to city residents and promotes cross-collaboration between specialists in child and family issues.
The Municipal Service Centre for Vesturbær, Miðborg and Hlíðar itself has around 100 employees and is among other things designated as a knowledge centre in multicultural issues and diversity. Among its staff are number of experts skilled in working with immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers; and with issues related to other minority groups.
Within the Vesturbær, Miðborg and Hlíðar borough is a neighbourhood with 12 primary/secondary schools and 25 preschools as well as 4 upper secondary schools. The Municipal Service Centre for Vesturbær, Miðborg and Hlíðar works with the local schools on projects related to dropout rates etc.
The employees of the service centre that worked on the Student Voices project improved their knowledge in issues related to school development through the collaboration with their partners and the findings of the Student Voices project. As a result, they are better equipped to improve the quality of their services to teachers, students and other stakeholders within the service centre and the outer municipality.
